US Deports Asylum Seekers to War-Torn Central African Republic

An ICE-chartered flight recently departed Louisiana, carrying nearly two dozen people to a country currently reeling from a civil war that has displaced over a million residents. Among those targeted were Iranian nationals who had previously secured court-ordered protections against deportation, citing credible fears of persecution in their home country. While some individuals managed to secure emergency stays, others were not as fortunate.

Legal experts and advocates argue this practice represents a dangerous shift in immigration enforcement. By utilizing secretive bilateral deals, the administration effectively circumvents standard due process, leaving vulnerable individuals—including torture survivors and political activists—abandoned in regions lacking basic healthcare or security. According to Human Rights First, the U.S. has spent approximately $44 million in taxpayer funds to facilitate these transfers to at least 24 countries. Critics, including Senator Chris Murphy, have condemned the strategy as both legally precarious and profoundly inhumane, noting that these deportees face a high risk of being forcibly returned to the very regimes from which they initially fled.
